Rationale: Timmy Timer will be used in the classroom to help with time management. Timmy Timer’s purpose in the classroom is to act as a timer to make sure our class ‘takes off’ on time according to Timmy’s schedule. Timmy’s Timer gives the students a time restriction to wrap up whatever they are doing.
Timmy Timer always has his countdown clock nearby. The teacher can adjust the time clock depending on the time needed to pick up, line up, etc. (30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, etc.) Timmy and his timer will help motivate students to be prepared and ready when ‘take off’ begins. If the students aren’t ready, they didn’t make it onto the space mission.
Materials:
· Timmy Timer – Astronaut cutout or doll
· Markers
· Electronic Countdown clock
· Visible space to put Timmy and his Timer – it must be visible from any spot in the classroom
o On the board
o On the teacher’s desk
o Near the door
Motivation: “Kindergarteners, we have a very important and special friend in our classroom this year. His name is Timmy Timer and he is an astronaut that works for NASA. Has anyone heard the word NASA before? (NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration) NASA sends space missions into outer space to find out more of what is in our universe. Our astronaut, Timmy Timer, cannot miss his spaceship launch and we need to be ready when he takes off. He can’t wait for us. If he misses his countdown, he won’t be able to finish his very important mission for NASA. Timmy Timer and I will run the timer. You need to be ready when the timer goes off, just in time for blast off!”
